The Geographical and General Characteristics of Salalah

Salalah is the third largest city of Oman. It has a population of 368000 people including different nationalities. Since the city is home to immigrants, you can find multi-lingual schools in the city.

The city, lying in the southwest of Oman, is the capital of the governate of Dhofar. The Dhofar Mountains stretch on the northern side of the city, and the sea of Oman lies on the south. It also possesses the largest port in the Arabian Peninsula. The port is a commercial hub of the region and an important spot for entering the Middle East, India and Africa.

It is interesting to know that the city is the birthplace of the most popular king of Oman, Sultan Qabus. In addition, the tomb of Saint Mary’s father is situated in the city. With a length of 30 meters and width of 89 centimeters, it is the biggest tomb in the world.

Salalah is like a green jewel at the heart of the desert, which has a green nature. The city enjoys richer vegetation in the summer. So, the climate of the city is cooler compared to the northern and central cities.

The best time for travelling to the city is in the monsoon months of July and August. The seasonal changes that take place during this time is known as Khareef. At this period of time, the city offers green orchards and roaring waterfalls. 

Khareef Festival is held annually on the occasion of approaching autumn. Many tourists travel to the city with the purpose of attending in the festival. It gives tourists the opportunity to enjoy themselves with dancing and traditional foods.

Al Balid Archeological Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Al Balid Archeological Site, listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an open-air park. You can explore the remnants of the site on the coast of Arabian Sea in the form of column. 

Al Balid Archeological Site, covering an area of 5000 m2, is the remnant of a 12-century port city. Centuries ago, it was one of the most important ports of Oman and a distinguished trading center. As the capital of Oman, the city played an important role in trading with different countries, especially India. At the time, frankincense was exchanged for Indian species.

The remnants discovered in Al Balid Archeological Site is displayed in the covered museum of Frankincense Land. The museum also includes a section related to the relics of different historical eras, which makes it a distinguished museum. The museum took this name due the importance of frankincense trade during the history.

Soltan Qabus Mosque of Salalah, the Largest Mosque in Dhofar Governate

Soltan Qabus Mosque, located at the center of the city, is a most-visited religious site. It is the biggest mosque of southern Oman and Dhofar Governate. The mosque has been constructed based on Islamic architecture and features two domes and two minarets. The prayer hall includes enormous chandeliers which have illuminated the interior space and green carpets. It is noteworthy that non-Muslims can also visit the mosque.

Taqah Castle, the Most Famous Castle of Salalah

Taqah Castle is one of the historical constructions around the city. The castle, constructed in the 19th Century, appeals tourists due to its architectural aspects. The interior space of the castle is decorated with stunning plasterworks. In addition, the paintings inside the castle has distinguished it from the other monuments.

It is so spectacular to watch the sunset on top of Taq-e castle, so we recommend visiting it in the afternoon. There are also amazing plantations around the castle to which you can dedicate a part of your time.

Al Mughsail, a Beach with White Sand

Al Mughsail is the most beautiful and touristic beach in Salalah, which offers a beautiful landscape including mountain and sea. Besides, it is a stretch of bright blue water and white sands. The beach is also a good place for camping and water sports.

Of the attractions of Al Mughsail, we can refer to the natural fountains known as Al Marneef Blowholes, having been formed due to the coastal holes. On the monsoon seasons, the waves penetrate to the holes with high speed and create high fountains.

Al Marneef Cave is close to Al Mughsail Beach. It is also a great picnic spot in which there are facilities such as bench for the relaxation of tourists. The cave offers an eye-catching view to the mountain and sea. You can also capture the gigantic view of the cave on the beach.

Al Marneef Cave, formed at the heart of the mount, has a relatively high altitude. As a result, you should take a narrow steep way to reach the cave.

This valley, extending through green heights and hills, ends Khor Rori Estuary. This estuary has a high environmental value and is on the list of Oman protected areas. It is also a good destination for the interested ones to bird watching.
