Abbasi Jameh Mosque

Abbasi Jameh Mosque is of the most important Safavid-era monuments, located on the southern face of Naqsh-e Jahan Square. This mosque, dating back to the 16th century, was built by the order of Shah Abbas the Great in the anniversary of his 24th year of kingdom. It is listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Naqsh-e Jahan Square. This amazing mosque is still active and holds daily prayers.

Abbasi Jameh Mosque, a Masterpiece in Architecture and Tiling

Abbasi Jameh Mosque is regarded as a masterpiece in the field of architecture, tiling and carpentry. This 4-iwan style mosque connects Naseriyeh and Suleimanie Schools, respectively located on its southeastern and southwestern sides. Of the other attractions of this mosque, we can refer to the calligraphic inscriptions on its gate. These inscriptions were written in white thuluth script on a dark blue ground by Reza Abbasi.

The Acoustic Dome of Abbasi Jameh Mosque

With a height of 52 meter and diameter of 23 meter, the dome of this mosque is the biggest among the mosques of Isfahan. In addition, the interior minarets are 48 meters and the minarets located on the entrance are 40 meters.

If you stand under the dome and make a light noise, you can hear its echo so clearly. Many of the artists believe that it is the culmination of Islamic architecture.

In the past that there was no audio device, the acoustic properties of the dome were so practical, especially for calling to prayers and religious speeches. You can also see this feature in some of the other Iranian monuments.

The Harmony of Different Ranges of Blue Colors in the Tiles of Abbasi Jameh Mosque

This mosque owes its glory to the tiling ornaments covering the interior and exterior. Contrary to the faience tiles applied on the mosque’s entrance, the other sections of this construction feature seven-color mosaic tiles. You can observe different ranges of blue color in these tiles.

The Iwans (Porches) of Abbasi Jameh Mosque

Based on the Persian architecture, this congressional jameh mosque is classified as a 4-iwan mosque. This construction includes two minarets on the entrance and two minarets on the southern iwan (porch). The southern iwan is considered the largest iwan of the mosque. A stone, known as Count Hour Stone, is located in the courtyard of Suleimanie School. This stone is functioned to specify the noon time for the worshipers to pray.

The Other Architectural Specification of Abbasi Jameh Mosque

Abbasi Jameh Mosque includes many stone inscriptions on which the edicts of Shah Abbas the Great are engraved. In fact, all parts of this monument have high historical value, especially its all-stone minbar (pulpit). This minbar has 14 steps; the upper one which is wider than the other steps was the sitting place of the preacher.

Abbasi Jameh Mosque includes 7 sangabs (huge stone bowls) cute into a piece to provide drinking water for prayers. These stone bowls are made from jasper and include flower patterns.

One of the sangabs is located in the entrance and covered with glass. Some of the other sangabs that maintain high historical value, include verses written in Persian-style calligraphy.

Shah Abbas Safavid’s purpose of constructing Naqsh-e Jahan Square was moving the old bazaar of the city from the Seljuk square to the Safavid square. So, he ordered on building a mosque in the square to be as splendid as Jameh Mosque of Isfahan.
